What Is ERCOT?
ERCOT stands for Electric Reliability Council of Texas. It’s the organization that manages the flow of electric power to roughly 90% of Texas’s electric load. Unlike most states, Texas operates its own largely independent grid, which means what happens inside the ERCOT grid stays in Texas.
What Do Grid Warnings Actually Mean?
ERCOT issues different levels of alerts based on how close supply is to demand:
- Conservation Appeal: Voluntary — ERCOT is asking Texans to reduce usage to help maintain grid stability
- Watch: Reserves are tighter than normal. Grid operators are paying close attention
- Advisory: Operating reserves have dropped below target. Generators are being brought online
- Warning: Reserves are critically low. Firm load shed (rolling blackouts) may be imminent
- Emergency: Rotating outages may be occurring to protect the grid
How Grid Stress Affects Your Bill
If you’re on a variable rate plan or a real-time pricing plan, grid stress events are bad news for your wallet. When demand spikes and supply tightens, the wholesale price of electricity can jump dramatically — sometimes to hundreds of times the normal rate — and those costs can be passed directly to you.
This is exactly what happened during Winter Storm Uri in 2021, when some variable-rate customers received bills for thousands of dollars.
How to Protect Yourself
Switch to a Fixed Rate Plan
This is the single most effective protection. On a fixed rate plan, your price per kWh doesn’t change regardless of what’s happening on the grid. ERCOT could be screaming emergency alerts and your bill won’t budge.
Participate in Demand Response Programs
Some electricity plans pay you to reduce your usage during peak demand events. This can actually put money back in your pocket when grid stress is highest.
Have a Backup Plan for Outages
Keep flashlights, battery packs, and a few days of non-perishable food on hand. Texas summers can be unforgiving.
