Let’s be honest—Texas electricity bills are a maze.
They’re full of weird terms, hidden fees, and mystery math.
So if you’ve ever stared at your bill like:
“What in the ERCOT is this??”
You’re not alone.
And that’s exactly why Watt Panda is here: to decode it line by line, so you know where your money’s going—and how to stop overpaying.
⚡ Anatomy of a Texas Electricity Bill (AKA: What You’re Really Paying For)
Every provider formats their bill a little differently, but most include some version of the following:
🐼 1. Account Info + Service Address
This is the “who, what, and where.”
Make sure your name, address, and account number are correct.
You’d be surprised how many people pay the wrong bill.
🔋 2. Usage Summary (aka How Much Juice You Used)
Usually shown in:
- kWh used (kilowatt-hours)
- Billing period (e.g. June 1–June 30)
- Sometimes includes a bar graph of past usage
👀 Why it matters: Many plans change pricing depending on usage tiers. Go a little over or under, and your rate might jump.
🧾 3. Energy Charges (What Your Provider Is Charging)
This is the price you agreed to in your plan—typically listed as:
- “Energy Charge” (e.g. 12.3¢ per kWh)
- Multiplied by your usage
‼️ BUT this doesn’t include the delivery charges (keep reading… 👇)
🚛 4. TDU Delivery Charges (The Sneaky Part)
These are charges from your utility company (Oncor, CenterPoint, etc.). They include:
- Flat monthly charge (like a cover fee)
- Per kWh fee (based on how much you use)
So yes—you pay two companies on one bill:
- Your provider (for electricity)
- Your TDU (for delivering it to your house)
💡 Watt Panda always includes TDU fees when calculating your total cost. We don’t believe in surprises—unless it’s cake.
💵 5. Other Fees, Credits, or Adjustments
Things like:
- Base fees
- Minimum usage charges
- Meter fees
- Bill credits or referrals
📉 These are often where providers sneak in “gotcha” costs. We flag these during our plan evaluations, so you don’t end up paying for electricity you didn’t even use.
📊 6. Total Amount Due
Usually at the top and bottom of your bill (just to make sure you see it).
This includes:
- Energy usage charges
- Delivery fees
- Taxes
- Any one-time extras
If this number is way higher than you expected, there’s usually a culprit hiding in the details—and Watt Panda can help find it.
🧠 Watt Panda Pro Tips:
✔ Always compare your effective rate (total bill ÷ total kWh used) to your plan’s advertised rate. If it’s way off, you’ve got a plan problem.
✔ Keep an eye out for auto-renewals with worse rates. Many people get hit with price hikes after month 12.
✔ Take a pic of your bill and upload it to wattpanda.com. We’ll read it for you and tell you straight up if you’re overpaying.
