Letâs be honestâTexas electricity bills are a maze.
Theyâre full of weird terms, hidden fees, and mystery math.
So if youâve ever stared at your bill like:
âWhat in the ERCOT is this??â
Youâre not alone.
And thatâs exactly why Watt Panda is here: to decode it line by line, so you know where your moneyâs goingâand how to stop overpaying.
⥠Anatomy of a Texas Electricity Bill (AKA: What Youâre Really Paying For)
Every provider formats their bill a little differently, but most include some version of the following:
đŒ 1. Account Info + Service Address
This is the âwho, what, and where.â
Make sure your name, address, and account number are correct.
Youâd be surprised how many people pay the wrong bill.
đ 2. Usage Summary (aka How Much Juice You Used)
Usually shown in:
- kWh used (kilowatt-hours)
- Billing period (e.g. June 1âJune 30)
- Sometimes includes a bar graph of past usage
đ Why it matters: Many plans change pricing depending on usage tiers. Go a little over or under, and your rate might jump.
đ§Ÿ 3. Energy Charges (What Your Provider Is Charging)
This is the price you agreed to in your planâtypically listed as:
- âEnergy Chargeâ (e.g. 12.3Âą per kWh)
- Multiplied by your usage
âŒïž BUT this doesnât include the delivery charges (keep reading⊠đ)
đ 4. TDU Delivery Charges (The Sneaky Part)
These are charges from your utility company (Oncor, CenterPoint, etc.). They include:
- Flat monthly charge (like a cover fee)
- Per kWh fee (based on how much you use)
So yesâyou pay two companies on one bill:
- Your provider (for electricity)
- Your TDU (for delivering it to your house)
đĄ Watt Panda always includes TDU fees when calculating your total cost. We donât believe in surprisesâunless itâs cake.
đ” 5. Other Fees, Credits, or Adjustments
Things like:
- Base fees
- Minimum usage charges
- Meter fees
- Bill credits or referrals
đ These are often where providers sneak in âgotchaâ costs. We flag these during our plan evaluations, so you donât end up paying for electricity you didnât even use.
đ 6. Total Amount Due
Usually at the top and bottom of your bill (just to make sure you see it).
This includes:
- Energy usage charges
- Delivery fees
- Taxes
- Any one-time extras
If this number is way higher than you expected, thereâs usually a culprit hiding in the detailsâand Watt Panda can help find it.
đ§ Watt Panda Pro Tips:
â Always compare your effective rate (total bill Ă· total kWh used) to your planâs advertised rate. If itâs way off, youâve got a plan problem.
â Keep an eye out for auto-renewals with worse rates. Many people get hit with price hikes after month 12.
â Take a pic of your bill and upload it to wattpanda.com. Weâll read it for you and tell you straight up if youâre overpaying.
